Converting free users to paid is one of the biggest challenges that content-based sites face.

SoftwareCEO founder Bruce Hadley's blow-by-blow account of the promotional email campaign he used to get paid subscribers is packed with tips on effective email marketing.

I asked Bruce if I could reprint his long article (normally you access it through his paid archives) and he said yes. Use the link below to get the full story.

You'll learn:
  • how to use hype in a promotional message, even if that's not your usual style

  • the importance of bundling several items as your offer

  • where to put the "Sign up here" link in your email

  • why a longer message works better

  • tips on text vs. HTML

... and lots more. This article is a keeper. Print it out and read as inspiration or a checklist for your next email campaign.

If the name Roger C. Parker sounds familiar it's because Roger has been writing and consulting about effective design for 20 years.

Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerrilla Marketing fame calls him "the minister who marries words and pictures."

You may have his classic Looking Good in Print on your shelf. More recently, he's perfected an award-winning one-page newsletter concept.

If marketing with an e-newsletter is on your plate, you don't want to miss this audio conference during which Roger & I will critique live up to 15 HTML newsletters. (If the date has passed, you can order the Audio CD and PDF transcript.)

"This event was well worth my time. Roger's delivery was much like an eccentric professor I had in college... Obviously a genius. And more interesting than if he were perfectly polished. I particularly liked the give and take between you and Roger." - teleseminar participant

In addition to a useful mini report from Roger on e-newsletter design, you get a PDF handout with a screenshot, clickable URL and scorecard for each newsletter we critique.

You'll get dozens of specific tips from Roger on the key design elements that make your newsletter reader-friendly - and hence more effective as a marketing tool.

Scribble notes while you're listening and use them to compile a list of immediate improvements for your own e-newsletter.

A better color scheme? More white space? One column or two? How many articles? Should your newsletter header replicate the header on your site?

Newsletters will be rated on the following criteria:

Recognition
Are the nameplate, colors, general layout, personality and style of your HTML newsletter recognizable - and appropriate to your brand - from issue to issue?

Engagement
How quickly and effectively are you engaging your readers? Headlines, subheads and teasers are key to grabbing attention.

Organization
How accessible is the information in your newsletter? Key elements of clear organization are navigation, hierarchy and category titles. What's your clutter factor?
Readability
Are you striving for maximum readability? Such devices as type size and line length, paragraph length, and foreground vs. background contrast will determine your success.

Value
As Roger puts it in his mini report, The 6 Essentials of HTML Newsletter Success, (download a copy instantly when you register for the teleseminar), "Continued reader satisfaction is based on the value your newsletter offers." What is the quality and quantity of your content? The balance between promotion and information?

Functionality
These are no longer viewed as "extras" by newsletter readers. They include: printer-friendly versions, forward to a friend, links and resources for further reading, contact information and subscriber status (change email, unsubscribe, etc.).
