Can you ever *stop* blogging?

By Debbie Weil

Zane Safrit, one of the blogging CEOs that I interviewed for The Corporate Blogging Book, asked me that question, a bit tongue-in-cheek but semi-seriously as well.

Of course the answer is you can do what you want, as long as you explain your decision clearly. And it means thinking ahead of time about whether a blog is an integral piece - or not - of your marketing communications strategy.

We're still "in early innings," as I say in the book. So if your blog is an experiment, you might want to say so up front and set expectations accordingly.

Another approach, of course, is to launch a blog that is clearly event-specific and time-limited. Wells Fargo did that recently when it launched a two-month blog to commemmorate the 100th anniversary of San Francisco's Great Fire & Earthquake of 1906.

Read on to get the inside story of two A-list bloggers who announced their retirement recently from the blogosphere.

They cite the time factor and re-ordering priorities as the main reasons. And one talks about wanting more "privacy."

P.S. I want to hear what you think! Heck, we all do. Leave a Comment after you click through for More.

One-on-one blog coaching for busy execs and CEOs

If you've been dragging your heals on starting a blog, like many busy execs, I can help!

Included in my Executive Blog Launch is:

- A customized blog template that mirrors the colors, look & feel of your main site

- A hosted blogging account on either TypePad.com or WordPress.com (your choice)

- Up to two months of one-on-one coaching from me to kickstart your blog writing, along with a plan for what to write about, how often to post and how to keep it going.

This is the fastest, easiest way to get started with a professional-looking blog. Here's an example of one I created for executive development guru Verne Harnish of Gazelles.com. He's also author of the best-selling "Rockefeller Habits."

Last chance to register for MarketingSherpa's Email Summit in Chicago, April 20-21, 2006

***** 5-star recommendation by Debbie Weil

This is the best conference you'll find this year for email marketers!

Join e-newsletter publishers, e-commerce marketers, e-retailers, BtoB marketers and agency folks to get the latest on email marketing tactics from creative to multinational to advanced testing.

A highlight is a panel on deliverability issues featuring AOL's postmaster.

You'll hear 21 case studies from companies as varied as American Airlines, Vail Resorts, Donordigital and Pearson's Wine and Liquors.

I've been to a number of MarketingSherpa events and they are always meaty - and great networking.

More details and register here.

Advance praise for The Corporate Blogging Book

The time, attention and detail that go into editing, formatting and proofreading a manuscript to turn it into a typeset book are mind-boggling.

Trust me.

Another piece of the publishing puzzle is soliciting advance reviews to print on the book jacket. I've been completely involved at every step of the way and I can't say enough good things about my publisher, Penguin Portfolio.

Here's a jacket blurb (as they're called in the trade) for The Corporate Blogging Book, which will be published on August 3, 2006 - only four months from now!

"To blog or not to blog?  In business today, that is the question.  And nobody is more qualified to provide the answer - and to demystify the blogosphere for Corporate America - than Debbie Weil.  With incisive writing, vivid examples, and plenty of takeaways, this is *the* book smart businesspeople should read to understand the ins and outs of blogging.  Prepare to take notes!"
